Night Singer: The Collected Poems of Frank D. Moore

Editor's Note

I had known Frank in graduate school at the University of Cincinnati in the 1960s, but we were then out of touch for many years. When we began communicating again in the late 1990s he asked me to take care of his poems when he died. He had published The Traveller’s Rest Poems as a chapbook in 1995, but at the time of his death nothing else was collected. He also left no instructions as to what he wanted done. After his death Gene Sheeley in Santa Fe collected and shipped all of Frank’s work to me in Ohio. There were over a hundred poems in all, some with many drafts. I have generally chosen to include the most recent draft of each poem (when I could determine a date), though this was not always the case. I did not alter the wording in any of the poems, though “In the Outhouse“ was not really finished-- that is., lacked a clean copy-- and Gene and I conferred on how to make sense of all the crossouts and marginal arrows. In making the final selection of the poems I was assisted by Gene Sheeley, Judy Elliott, Marsha Larsen, Elaine Terranova, Marian Lorenz and Joan Mitchell. The final book design was by Chris Myers of Philadelphia.
